Story ranking on Google News

On Google News, we strive to present high-quality, trustworthy, news content covering topics of interest to you.

To make Google News as interesting and useful to you as possible, we use a range of factors to influence ranking of content on Google News, including:

  • Relevance of content
  • Prominence
  • Authoritativeness
  • Freshness
  • Usability
  • Location and Language

Algorithms may personalize your news for these sections:

  • "For you” in Home
  • Topics, sources, and locations in Following
  • "Picks for you” stories in your briefing
  • Your topics
  • Local news
  • Notifications

Algorithms personalize your news based on certain factors, including your interests, either that you’ve specified or that we inferred from your past activity on Google products and Youtube, depending on your activity settings.

You can also learn more about how Google News stories are selected and how to see stories you want on Google News.

Some publishers could have a contractual agreement with Google to allow licensed use of their article content; this doesn't affect article ranking.

On video-only feeds, results are limited to YouTube-hosted content and the content of licensed publishers.

Advertisements on Google News

Articles included on Google News sometimes serve advertisements, which are labeled as such. The publishers themselves manage these advertisements. Google could receive a portion of the payment from the advertiser.
